Sustainable Waste Management: Yaoundé 1st District Takes Action

The Yaoundé 1st District Municipality has taken a decisive step in the fight against unsanitary conditions. Under the leadership of Mayor Jean Marie ABOUNA, a training seminar dedicated to sustainable waste management was held on Thursday, April 2, 2026, in the Municipal Council Chamber, bringing together administrative and traditional authorities, as well as community stakeholders.

Themed "Building Sustainable Waste Management: The Role of Municipal Councilors and Neighborhood Committee Presidents," this meeting aimed to strengthen the capacities of local stakeholders, who are on the front lines of the household waste challenge. From the outset, emphasis was placed on the urgent need for collective action to reverse the trend of illegal dumping, which has become a significant public health and urban planning issue.

Throughout the discussions, the moderator painted a concerning picture, marked by rapid urbanization, strong population growth, and inadequate waste management practices. Faced with this situation, participants explored concrete solutions focused on raising awareness, education, and direct community involvement.

Waste management expert Simon Bernard Toum led several modules covering topics such as understanding household waste, implementing waste management by municipal and community stakeholders, and exploring innovative methods and opportunities related to the circular economy. These insights helped reposition waste management as a driver of wealth and job creation.

The well-structured workshops also highlighted the need for better support for city councilors and neighborhood committee presidents, who often lack appropriate tools and training. Participants unanimously welcomed the initiative, while calling for its continuation through regular sessions and strengthened institutional support.

At the end of this seminar, one conviction emerged: the fight against unsanitary conditions in Yaoundé requires strong and lasting local ownership. The Yaoundé 1st district therefore intends to pursue its efforts to make waste management a cornerstone of urban development and the well-being of its residents.
