Cultural Activities

Management of the Joseph Nkou Municipal Cultural Centre, the public library and the annual cultural programme. Workshops, concerts, exhibitions, festivals, artist residencies.

Joseph Nkou Municipal Cultural Centre

Open to the public since 15 April 2026, the JNMCC is the district's cultural hub. It includes a 15,000-book library, a 300-seat auditorium, art workshops, a recording studio and an exhibition space.

Public library

  • Free access for on-site consultation;
  • Membership card for borrowing (up to 3 books for 15 days): 2,000 FCFA/year for adults, 500 FCFA for pupils and students, free for seniors;
  • Hours — Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 AM-6:00 PM, closed Monday;
  • 10 computer stations with free Internet (1 hour per day per person, by sign-up).

Regular workshops

  • Visual arts (Wed 2-5 PM, Sat 9 AM-12 PM) — 2,000 FCFA/month;
  • Music — piano, guitar, percussion intro (Tue/Thu 4-6 PM) — 3,000 FCFA/month;
  • Theatre (Wed 4-6 PM) — 2,000 FCFA/month;
  • Traditional and contemporary dance (Sat 2-5 PM) — 2,000 FCFA/month;
  • Creative writing (Fri 5-7 PM) — 2,000 FCFA/month;
  • Children's reading club (Saturday morning) — free.

Annual events programme

  • Visual Arts Biennale (May);
  • Cameroonian Film Festival (June);
  • Free summer art workshops for children (July-August);
  • "Yaoundé in Letters" literary meetings (October);
  • End-of-year concert (December).

Artist residencies

The city hall welcomes 2-3 artists in residence per year (3 to 6 months), with free housing and workshop space, in exchange for producing a publicly exhibited work. Applications open in January.

Room hire

The auditorium and exhibition hall can be rented for association or private events. Local associations: 50,000 FCFA/evening; private rates: 150,000 FCFA/evening. Requests to be filed at least 30 days before the desired date.
